The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.
— Mahatma Ghandi

It’s that special time of year when  thoughts of giving back to those in need enter your mind. Sometimes it's nice to remember that you don’t need to be rich to make a difference. We can all give to charity and make the world a better place, one dollar at a time. If you don’t have money to give, you can still be of service by volunteering.

There are many ways to give back without causing financial stress. One of the best ways is to plan ahead for the upcoming year. Try to figure out how much you can afford to give and develop a habit of reserving that amount of money each month. It will help you to meet your personal donation goals for the year.

Instead of making a large monetary donation during the holidays when you know money is going to be tight, give smaller amounts throughout the year to the charities and causes you care about.

Volunteering and giving will benefit you as well. The old adage, “It’s better to give than receive,” is really true. Donating your time can help you in so many ways. It can make you feel good about yourself, it may make your problems seem smaller by comparison, and it’s great to feel needed and appreciated. One of the best feelings in the world is knowing that you really made a difference in someone’s life.

Throughout the year, if you give back in monetary or physical donations, you’ll save money on your taxes. Keep track of your donations of money and goods during the year to qualified organizations so you can itemize your deductions.

Let's spread some holiday cheer without letting budgets hold us back! Any donation really makes a big difference to those in need.
